A few days ago, while working on the LEGS puzzles, I realized that an instruction decoder is essentially a lookup table, mapping instruction numbers to CPU state such as register selections and unit operations. The designs the game walks you through are logic-based lookups, using the bits of the instruction to encode the state of the processor, but this idea can be generalized freely to any 256-entry lookup table.
The game provides two kinds of components that could, hypothetically, provide this table directly: RAM and Program parts. RAM can't be used for this, as it can't be configured by the player - only written to during the operation of your solution. Program parts were more promising. However, the decoder needs to provide instructions to a large number of CPU parts - for my implementation, at least instructions for the A and B operand busses (connect to register, connect to immediate, connect to counter, connect to input), the low and high result busses (connect to register, connect to counter, connect to output), and an instruction bus (connect to counter + 4, connect to immediate), as well as instructions for the ALU, COND, and MEM units.
There are too many combinations to encode in only 256 entries, and in practice I would need a table per configuration item - around nine tables, from my notes. This would be extremely bulky in a top-level component, and program components can't be embedded inside of custom parts, so they can't be buried in the decoder itself.
In the absence of a ready-to-use way to encode a lookup table in hardware, I built a 256-byte ROM component.
For size reasons, a 256-byte ROM component consists of four 64-byte ROM components ("banks"), arranged into two rows and two columns. Each 64-byte ROM component, in turn, consists of 64 single-byte cells, arranged in an eight-by-eight grid. At most one ROM cell, across all 256 cells, can output a value at a time, controlled by an eight-bit address line. Addresses encode the location of the desired ROM cell as follows:

For simplicity of implementation, each bank ignores the top two bits, so cell zero is also addressible as cell 64, cell 128, or cell 192. This allows the same hardware to serve all four of the banks in a ROM component, without regard for the bank selector bits, but requires that the output from each bank be controlled by a selector.
Each ROM cell consists of a single byte constant (the value for that cell), controlled by a selector component (SEL), which takes a value and a row and column signal, and outputs that value only when both are high. The selector is packaged into a custom component to minimize space usage and for reuse in multiple designs.
In total, each ROM256 component uses 5,304 NAND gates and has a delay of 26. ROM64 components use 1,240 NAND gates and have a delay of 18, and individual SELs use 18 gates and have a delay of 8. This is reasonably fast, and moderately gate-intensive - though not, by any stretch, the worst: my abandoned first ROM version used over 20k gates per 256 bytes. Because this implementation involves nested custom components, ROM256 components can only be used at nesting level 4 or in the top-level design.
Programming a ROM component for a specific purpose is extremely tedious, and requires thousands of mouse clicks:
There's some room for improvement in the UI, here, as a ROM component is functionally identical to a Program part with a single byte output (though with more than ten times the gate count). The built-in Program part allows the player to type in arbitrary data, or even use symbolic labels, whereas this custom ROM component must be bit-bashed. However, unlike a Program part, this does not lose its data from puzzle to puzzle, and can be included in a custom part.
I'd love to see this added to the game's teaching process - perhaps with a puzzle where the player must build a small ROM chip (however they like), with, say, four or eight values, which unlocks a 256-byte programmable ROM component that can be stored in custom components and which keeps its value from puzzle to puzzle. Short of that, allowing numeric input, as an alternative to bit-switching, when creating constant signals would help a ton.

It feels like it's been a while since I last posted a journal entry in here. 3 months ago was my last, and it was about finally getting out of comfort zone and asking a girl I met for her number. This was a huge step for me since I have been terrified of rejection for all my life and opted to just PMO instead in the past.
Since this, 2 months ago, I met another girl through a mutual friend in this new city I have been living in for a few months now, and had great conversation with her, and eventually got her number as well. This time felt like an even bigger accomplishment. When I met her, we vibed well and I was very attracted to her, which would have made me terrified in the past to even try. This time though, I was able to push myself to go through with it, and the experience has been great. I felt alive, like the escape of PMO was finally not holding me back from talking to girls.
Me and this girl have been talking, and it has been going very well. A month ago, after dating for a month, we decided to make it official, and now have been together for a month. We kissed and made out often, things that would have been scary for me attempt before this journey. We even had our first sexual experiences together recently, with touching each other down there, and everything has been amazing. These REAL experiences show me how fake the digital world of PMO really is, and I am grateful for this community and self improvement for pushing me to be much more than I previously was.
I feel more human.

Aside from my relationship, I have regrettably let other parts of my life in which I was improving before, fall apart. My gym schedule has completely fallen apart and I don't do any of the old good habits I had. I am in a weird stage in my life right now in a new city, as I am moving every 6 months for work for some time and living in a shitty living situation, so I have that to blame somewhat, but I really should get back into self improvement and move the rest of my life forward again.
I will soon, if I don't keep putting it off like I have been :)
This is the 1471th day of no P and 109th day of no MO.

TLDR: Used to not be able to talk to girls, now having a much better time and in a relationship now. Had my first sexual experiences. Having problems with keeping self improvement up in the other parts of my life currently.

cannot believe that in the span of just 6 months, 2042 went from being a hugely hyped game that people were excited for to being an absolute trainwreck and a disaster with hundreds of bugs and glitches and issues. It is unbelievable just how awful and poorly made this game is. From the optimization to specalists to the maps, it's all a mess and nobody is happy. The fact that there's more people playing Farming Simulator than Battlefield 2042 - possibly THE most hyped game of 2021 - just tells you the state of Battlefield.
And for those saying BF4 launched horribly too, you're right... but that game was good underneath all of the issues plaguing it. This game isn't. It isn't fun. Occasionally you'll have one or two fun moments but in general it doesn't have any soul. It's a passionless cashgrab and there is no care or love put into it.
And don't say that they'll fix the game and in a year it'll be amazing. It won't. The core design of this game is broken beyond repair. Gunplay, specialists, music, it's all bad. There is no way to save this game.
This is not a BR, this is BATTLEFIELD. The only reason specialists are even a thing here is to appeal to the 10 year old kids even though it's an M-rated game. The quips at the end are some of the worst things I have ever heard. It's like a 50 year old man trying to appeal to the youth and failing miserably. The fact that there's a specialist with an ability where she can see through walls is outrageous in every conceivable way.
It doesn't even feel good to shoot someone. There is no satisfaction there. No ping sound like in Battlefield 1, nothing, it's so empty and lifeless and all it does is make me want to play the REAL Battlefield games from the past. I think I underestimated how things can change in 5 years because playing BF1 after 2042 is night and day. 2042 is a bad ripoff of BF4, that's exactly what it is.
Let's not forget the maps either. One of the most important things of an FPS is for the maps to be enjoyable. A good map is one that has excellent dynamic and flow, not being too campy, not being too empty, just good fun. Caspian Border, Ballroom Blitz, Amiens and Metro are some good examples IMO, but those are just some of my favorites.
You may be asking, why do I have to explain what a good map is? Because apparently the people that made this game don't really know anything about good map design! These maps are atrocious. They're empty and hollow even with 128 players. No destruction at all and far too big to enjoy at all. The only exception is probably Renewal on Breakthrough, it's actually pretty fun (to me anyways). It feels like this game was made for 256 players and not 128, I just don't understand why they're so big. Even for a BR (there's a rumor this game was intended as one) these maps probably wouldn't be too fun. Don't even get me started on Kaleidoscope and objective C2.
Portal was supposed to be the saving grace of 2042 and yet it's so lacking. There's literally only 2 maps per game and it's too empty to enjoy long term. While I DO think that Portal will eventually be good it will take a long time and by then they'll already have the next game on the horizon so it'll be too late. Shame too, it's a great experience but it doesn't have the staying power it needs.
As a PC player it's impossible not to mention the optimization. Holy flying frisbees the optimization is godawful. It doesn't matter how powerful the GPU is because you can STILL have horrible framerates no matter what. In fact i've seen some people that have 2070 Supers that are getting under 60fps at 1080p on low settings! Being a 1660 Super user, it's astonishing how I can get 70fps on 1080p medium while people with far superior GPUs have worse performance than I do. And my RAM is literally only 2400mhz! (My speeds can't go any higher) For all of BFV's faults, it had very good optimization. This $60 alpha is embarrassing in it's performance.
But the worst part about this is that this may be the path Battlefield will go on if enough people buy it. If it sells well they'll make the next game similar to this one. Judging from the last 5-8 years in gaming I wouldn't doubt that they'd destroy this franchise. It'll become a simple and safe mediocre FPS series that'll just churn games out with minimal effort and the bare minimum of gameplay. You know that there's gonna be people that'll buy this and gobble it up, able to overlook all of the trash not knowing how good Battlefield used to be. Go back to BF1, BF4, or hell, even something like BF5 or Hardline and you'll see a huge improvement in quality. It's a shame just how far Battlefield has fallen. Even the music sucks. They ruined the theme song regardless of how well it fits the "world is destroyed" theme this game tries (and fails) to create due to the specialists murdering the otherwise dark and gritty tone.
This all just sucks. 2021 has been a bad year and we can't even get good games to make up for it. All I wanted was a fun Battlefield game with great gunplay, maps, and movement and instead we get this. I can't believe this is what came out and it sucks and now we'll have to wait 1 to 2 years for it to be finished.
